Lost Your Car Key In Srinagar? Here’s Exactly What To Do

Cars parked at night

Losing your only car key is stressful, especially late at night or far from home. The good news is that it is almost always fixable, and usually much faster than people expect. This guide walks through what to do, in order, if you have lost your car key anywhere in Srinagar.

1. Search properly before you panic

It sounds obvious, but a calm ten-minute search saves a lot of trouble. Retrace your steps and check:

  • Jacket and trouser pockets, bags and the shopping you were carrying
  • The last shop, office or restaurant you visited. Call them, many keep a box of things people leave behind
  • Around the car itself: under the seats, between the seat and the door, and on the ground nearby
  • At home: the door lock, the fridge top, the place you usually drop your keys

2. Lost, or locked inside the car?

Look through the windows. If the key is sitting on a seat or still in the ignition, you do not need a new key, you need the door opened. Do not break a window. Call us first and tell us the car model so we can tell you what can be done.

3. Find your RC and ID

Before anyone makes a new key for a car, they should check that the car is yours. Keep the car’s Registration Certificate (RC) and a photo ID ready. A careful key maker asking for these is a good sign, it is what stops someone else getting a key to your car.

4. Note your car model, year and key type

This is what decides how your new key is made and what it costs. Have these ready when you call:

  • Make, model and year, for example “Maruti Suzuki Swift, 2019”
  • Whether the car has a normal key slot or a push-start button
  • What the lost key looked like: a plain metal key, a key with a plastic head, a key with lock and unlock buttons, or a flip key

Not sure which one you had? Our guide to the different types of car keys has a quick way to tell.

5. Call a car key maker before you tow the car to a dealer

Many people assume only the company showroom can make a new key. Dealers can, but it often means towing the car there and waiting days for a key to be ordered. A car key specialist can usually make and program the key for most cars sold in India locally, often while you wait.

At Gousia Enterprises on Madina Chowk, Lal Chowk we are open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Call or WhatsApp 070061 43188 with your car model and year, and we will tell you exactly what it takes and the price before any work starts.

How is a new key made without the original?

Most modern car keys have two parts: the metal blade that turns the lock, and a small chip (transponder) inside the head that talks to the car’s immobiliser. Both have to be right for the car to start.

  1. 1 The blade is cut to match your car’s locks, either from the key code or by reading the lock itself.
  2. 2 The chip, remote or smart key is programmed to your car, usually through the diagnostic port under the dashboard.
  3. 3 The key is tested in the doors, the ignition or start button, and the remote buttons before you leave.

Tip: Cutting the metal blade alone is not enough on a car with an immobiliser. The car will unlock but will not start until the chip is programmed.

Can the lost key still start my car?

If you think your key was stolen rather than dropped, mention it. On many cars, when a new key is programmed the old keys can be removed from the car’s memory, so the lost one will no longer start the engine. Ask about this when you call.

Make sure it never happens again

Once you have a working key, get a spare made at the same time. A spare costs far less than replacing a lost key from scratch, and you can keep it at home or with family. Read more about getting a duplicate car key in Srinagar.
