Duplicate Car Keys In Srinagar: Which Key Do You Have And How Is A Spare Made?

Car key being handed over

Most people only think about a spare car key after they have lost the only one. A duplicate is the cheapest way to avoid that day. But “just copy my key” means different things for different cars, so here is how to work out which key you have and what a proper duplicate involves.

The 5 types of car keys

1. Plain metal key

An all-metal key with no plastic head, found on older cars. It can be cut and copied quickly, with no programming needed.

2. Transponder (chip) key

Looks like a normal key with a plastic head, but there is a small chip inside. Most cars sold in India from the mid-2000s onwards use one. The car’s immobiliser checks the chip before it lets the engine start.

3. Remote key

A chip key with lock and unlock buttons, either built into the head or on a separate fob. The remote and the chip both need to be paired to the car.

4. Flip key

A remote key where the blade folds into the body and flips out at the press of a button. Plain or remote keys can often be converted into a flip key.

5. Smart key (push-start)

If your car has a start button instead of a key slot, it uses a smart or proximity key. You keep it in your pocket and the car detects it. These need to be coded to the car’s keyless system.

Why a cheap copy might not start your car

A roadside key cutter can copy the metal blade of a chip key, and that copy will open the doors. But without a programmed chip, the immobiliser will stop the engine from starting. A proper duplicate for a modern car has the blade cut and the chip, remote or smart key programmed to your car, then tested in your car.

Tip: Quick check: if your key has a plastic head, assume it has a chip and ask for the spare to be programmed.

What to bring

  • The car itself, so the new key can be programmed and tested
  • The key you already have
  • Your RC, so we can confirm the car is yours

How long does a duplicate car key take?

Most duplicate keys at our shop on Madina Chowk, Lal Chowk are cut and programmed while you wait. If your key needs a blank or remote we do not have in stock, we will tell you how long it will take when you call. Because we are open 24 hours, you can come in whenever suits you, including late evenings and Sundays.

Bike and scooter keys too

We also cut duplicate keys for most scooters and motorcycles. If your bike has a chip key, bring the bike along as well.

Look after your spare

  • Test the spare yourself before you put it away: lock, unlock and start the car
  • Keep it at home or with family, never inside the car
  • Replace the remote battery every year or two so the spare works when you need it
