Lost Your Car Key In Srinagar? Here’s Exactly What To Do
Lost every key to your car? Before you call a tow truck, here is what to check, what to bring and how a new key gets made without the original.
Pressing the button and getting nothing back is one of the most common car key problems we see. The good news is that a remote that has stopped working usually does not need to be replaced. Try these checks first, roughly in order from most to least likely.
1. Replace the remote battery
This is the cause most of the time, especially if the range has been getting shorter for a few weeks. Most car remotes use a small coin cell such as a CR2032 or CR2025. The type is printed on the old battery. Open the key carefully along its seam, swap the battery the same way up, and try again.
2. Blame the cold
Batteries lose power in the cold, so remotes often start failing in Srinagar during Chillai Kalan, even when they were fine in autumn. If your remote works after warming it in your hand for a minute, the battery is weak. Replace it before it dies completely.
3. Check the car battery
If the remote does nothing and the car’s interior lights are dim or the engine cranks slowly, the problem may be the car battery, not the key. Use the metal blade to open the door and see if the car starts.
4. Try the spare key
If you have a second remote, try it. If the spare works, the problem is in your main key. If neither works, the problem is more likely in the car.
5. Look for worn buttons or a cracked case
Buttons wear through with daily use, and a cracked case lets dust and moisture in. If you have to press hard or at an angle, the contacts under the buttons are probably worn. A new shell often fixes this, and you keep your existing chip and electronics. See our key shell and flip key service.
6. Water damage
A remote that has been through the wash or the rain may work on and off or not at all. Take the battery out, let the key dry completely, then try a fresh battery. If it still does not respond, the circuit board may need repair or the remote may need replacing.
7. The remote has lost its pairing
Sometimes a remote loses its link to the car, for example after a battery change or a car battery replacement. The key still turns the lock, but the buttons do nothing. This needs the remote to be reprogrammed to your car, which we do at the shop.
Push-start car says “key not detected”?
On many push-start cars you can still start the engine with a weak smart key by holding the key right against the start button while you press it. Check your owner’s manual for your car’s exact method. Then replace the battery, and if the warning keeps coming back, have the key checked.
When you do need a new remote
